Matthias Stiefel is Founder and Vice-Chairman of Interpeace – the International Peacebuilding Alliance - formerly called WSP International.
Interpeace is an international NGO incorporated in Switzerland in May 2000 on the recommendation of the United Nations and of main donor governments. Its mandate is to strengthen societies threatened or torn by war and to support the United Nations and the international community in their responses to conflict and crisis situations. It does so by initiating and supporting local peacebuilding initiatives in countries ranging from Somalia to Guatemala, from Macedonia to Rwanda and from Palestine to Guinea-Bissau.
WSP International was the successor body to the United Nations War-torn Societies Project (WSP) and to the WSP Transition Program, both headed by Mr. Stiefel between June 1994 and May 2000.
Before launching WSP, Mr. Stiefel worked as senior advisor or staff with various international organizations and governments, among these the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Swiss government. He has also been Managing Director of a private consultancy firm and was Deputy Director of the Program for Strategic and International Security Studies at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva. Mr. Stiefel is a member of many Boards and Chairman of A Rocha International, a Christian international conservation organizations active in eighteen countries. Mr Stiefel graduated in political science in 1973. He is a Swiss national and is married with two children

Promoting the transition to peace Interpeace has a clear niche in the peacebuilding sector due to its unique operational approach, special relationship with the UN and its role as a link between local, national and external actors in crisis countries. It has a dual mandate to: 1. Assist societies torn apart by war to overcome conflict and build lasting peace. 2. Support the United Nations and the international community in their efforts to build peace and prevent renewed conflict in cooperation with local and national actors. Added value Interpeace firmly believes that the key to creating a lasting peace is in its ownership. It works on the premise that if people feel the peace belongs to them, they are more likely to do their utmost to prevent it from collapsing. In this way, every citizen becomes a peacekeeper. Owning the peace While outsiders can play a decisive role in bringing fighting to an end, it is only the people in that society that can build sustainable peace. That is why Interpeace primarily works with local actors to ensure that the peace processes go beyond small political elite and engage a broad spectrum of society. All sectors of society By involving a broad cross section of society, everyone has a responsibility to take part in the rebuilding and reconciliation process. Experience shows that exclusion or marginalisation breed resentment and sows the seeds for renewed violence. Long term commitment Interpeace is committed to staying the course, accompanying a society along the often lengthy and bumpy road to peace as well as to building local capacity to manage any new conflicts that may emerge. Invitation aux Rencontres du Lundi
Les Rencontres du Lundi sont une branche du Cercle des Amitiés internationales qui fut créé en 1920 pour accueillir les délégués et les journalistes accrédités auprès de la Société des Nations (S.d.N.). L’installation à Genève de l’Office des Nations Unies renforça la raison d’être du Cercle.
Dans les années ’70, le Cercle confia à des membres de son comité le soin d'organiser des rencontres informelles, d’où les Rencontres du Lundi, destinées à multiplier les contacts entre ressortissants suisses et étrangers dans une ambiance conviviale sans qu’aucune cotisation ne soit demandée, sauf, dans certains cas, une modeste participation aux frais.
Depuis lors, le comité des Rencontres du Lundi, entièrement bénévole, propose un programme ayant pour but de faire découvrir et aimer Genève aux membres de la Communauté internationale. Ce programme comprend des conférences et une soirée nationale par trimestre, ainsi que des visites commentées à Genève et ses environs. Il est imprimé à deux mille cinq cents exemplaires et adressé aux Missions permanentes et Consulats installés à Genève, ainsi qu’aux membres du Cercle des Amitiés Internationales et aux personnes qui en font la demande (voir page 4).
Les activités des Rencontres du Lundi se déroulent dans une belle demeure du xviiie siècle proche du Palais des Nations : la Villa Rigot, actuellement siège du Forum Humanitaire Mondial - Genève (GHF), qui met ses salons à notre disposition. La Villa Rigot a été léguée, en 1942, par M. John D. Rockefeller Junior à l’Université de Genève.

An invitation to the Rencontres du Lundi
The Rencontres du Lundi were founded in the seventies as a free offshoot of the Cercle des Amitiés Internationales. The Cercle, which dates back to 1920, was created in response to the need for an appropriate informal but none-the-less high standard meeting place for diplomats and accredited press professionals, who had been transferred to Switzerland by the League of Nations’ headquarters in Geneva, and later by the Geneva-based United Nations Office.
Three times a year, the volunteer Committee of the Rencontres du Lundi, sets up a programme that offers maximum of flexibility to its members. The programme is sent to permanent Missions and Consulates, to the members of the Cercle des Amitiés Internationales, and to whoever asks to be on its mailing list. There is no membership fee. (see p. 4).
The programme of the forthcoming season offers lectures on topics of general interest, guided visits in Geneva and surroundings, as well as a national evening at the Villa Rigot. The Villa Rigot is a beautiful 18th century villa, located near the United Nations. It houses the headquarters of the Global Humanitarian Forum – Geneva (GHF), who kindly hosts our get-together on Mondays. The Villa Rigot was bequeathed in 1942 by Mr. John D.
